FRANCE ART

Salut Randi.. I was just in the Eglise de Montreal in the Aude, south of France today.. I saw these seats around the alter & found them fascinating .. Many different decorations... The translation of "Misericord" literally is MERCY..as in "take a seat, buddy. Yeah you're bored but make a good show..but don't get too comfy.." The artist here had a good sense of humor! In the church at Montreal there were about 20, 25 of these on each side of the alter. It must have been an important community hundreds of years ago.. Today? Tourists & a fair population of English speakers.. Nice capture! Dona Dugay :0)

Randi Kuhne replied:

Hi Dona. Thanks, and thanks for the additional explanation. There were a couple others I got photos of that were even ruder...and hilarious. One of these days I may add them here!

Artist's Description

This is the front face of a misericord in the Collegiate Church of Saint Sylvain, Levroux, France. Carved in the middle ages, misericords symbolized virtues and vices, and were used by the monks during Mass to sort of sit on a bit during long periods of standing.
